Welcome to MasterWorks Painting & Remodeling’s blog series on preparing your home for sale. Over the next few months we will be sharing our knowledge in order to help you get the greatest return on your home improvement investments. This month, we share some of our top painting tips for resale.

When selling a home, first impressions are everything! Generally speaking, houses that seem dingy and dirty sit on the market a lot longer. One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to spruce up your house before putting it up for sale is to freshen it up by having it painted.

Top Painting Tips For Resale

Neutralize the color palette. Prospective buyers have to be able to picture themselves and their belongings in the house. Giving them a basic neutral backdrop will make this easier for them. Talk to your designer or painter and ask them for color options if you aren’t keen on white or beige.

Fool the eye. Selecting the right colors can make small rooms appear larger and dark rooms appear lighter. Light, bright colors tend to reflect light, making the room seem sunnier and more open.

Pay attention to detail. Don’t forget the baseboards, molding and window casings. They tend to get banged up the most and likely need a little extra TLC. Keep in mind that lower-sheen paint will help mask imperfections more than a glossy product.

Look up. If the ceilings are looking less than stellar and a quick wash doesn’t cut it, a coat of paint can brighten them up.

Don’t forget the curb appeal! If time and budget permit, and if your house needs it, exterior painting in a neutral color that suits the neighborhood can really increase its curb appeal and improve first impressions.

Whether you want to address a number of interior or exterior home improvements and repairs or you simply want to give the house a fresh coat of paint to update and refresh it, the professionals at MasterWorks would be happy to work with you to get your Fairfax home into selling shape.
