One of the first ways to safeguard your roof from damaging storms is to secure all windows and doors. It would also be wise to double-check any weather stripping and replace if needed. Air pressure plays a role during a storm and can cause problems with the roof if windows and doors are not properly secured. If a window or door blows open because of damaging winds or striking hail, this will raise the pressure in your home and cause instability in the roof structure.
Storms can cause gutters and drain spouts to get clogged up with soaked leaves, fallen branches, and flying debris. In turn, this can cause massive puddles to collect on the roof and spill over the sides of the gutters. The job of your gutter is to move stormwater away from the house preventing damage to the roof, siding, and other exterior features. If gutters are not cleaned out or secured well, wind, water, and ice from storms can cause the gutters to break away from the house, resulting in even more unnecessary damage to your home.
Storms bring with them all sorts of weather such as destructive hailstones, dangerous winds, and heavy snow. All of this can damage your roof, but a fallen tree branch can cause massive destruction. More than curled shingles or cracked tiles, tree branches can tear through the roof’s structure causing massive holes and wide gaps.
